Acoustic Counter Detection Tactical Decision Aid

In order to maintain acoustic advantage, submarine crews need to assess acoustic vulnerability for historical and planned tracks and own ship noisy evolutions. A TDA or TDAs that produce acoustic advantage and vulnerability overlays for the geographic plot are essential to this. Kern Technology Group and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory have teamed to develop a MATLAB-based TDA tool engine that when provided with the required inputs (own ship, environment, adversary) outputs acoustic vulnerability as a probability density function including an estimate of uncertainty. To ensure the TDA or TDAs are best suited to the actual tasks users are trying to accomplish, the Kern Technology Group (KTG) team will apply Human Factors and Human Systems Integration (HSI) principles in their development. The Acoustic Vulnerability TDA proposed by the KTG team will provide an effective and intuitive interface between operators and the information necessary for decision making and task execution; KTG”s approach reduces information acquisition costs and improves decision quality in support of the”jobs to be done”in a given situation context. The target transition path is via the Submarine Advanced Processor Build (APB) process, executed by PEO IWS5A. The targeted build for transitioning the Acoustic Counter Detection TDA is APB-17.

Crew Endurance Management Coaching

The United States Coast Guard created the Crew Endurance Management System (CEMS) to help maritime operators manage crew risk factors that lead to human error and performance degradation in maritime work environments.

• Is CEMS a requirement?  No, but it remains a high interest item for both the National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Coast Guard.  It may not be required during an inspection but they will certainly look at it during an accident investigation.

Adaptive Training for Submarine Navigation and Piloting

Kern Technology Group, LLC was the principal investigator for the ONR sponsored effort to develop and demonstrate validated, effective, adaptive training prototype systems to enhance individual and team training. The program developed and spun off many advanced technology products that are directly transitioning for use in submarine schoolhouse classrooms and on board nuclear submarines

The key technology at the core of these products are software algorithms diagnose the strengths of students as they perform periscope observations and provide tailored feedback and/or modify the training scenario to improve the effectiveness of training for each trainee.

These products and research were developed by Sonalysts, Inc; Naval Air Warfare Systems Training Systems Division; Naval Undersea Warfare Laboratories Newport Division; and Sandia National Laboratories.  KTG’s role was to lead the project as overall principal investigator and consult on the product development.

Periscope Operator Adaptive Training

KTG consulted with Naval Air Warfare Center’s Training Systems Division to help them create two adaptive training games for use on board submarines.  You can see read about the development of this game by clicking here.  These periscope operator games are already heading to the fleet for operator use.
